Google Maps can be used simply to find a location or in a much more complex manner to teach students about historical places, places around the world, and so on. Students and teachers can create maps to teach others about different locations.

In this project, students were assigned a territory in Europe and Africa. This was a two day project in which students spent the initial part of their time answering questions from this assignment sheet:

After researching needed information, students created their own Google Map. Direct instruction was provided and students populated their maps, identifying the parent country and the countries that have been colonized, as well as important people and events associated with the colonized area. Students were given a cheat sheet to help them through the process.
